Background
Produced between 1963 and 1975 in more than 225,000 units, the Alfa Romeo Giulia GT represents one of the Milan manufacturer's greatest successes, as well as one of its most iconic models and one of the most sought after classic car enthusiasts today. Based on the 1960s Giulia sedan, the car was famous for the liveliness of its DOHC four-cylinder engines and its excellent, safe driving. The coupe version emphasizes these sporting qualities, also thanks to its breathtaking lines and class-leading driving characteristics. Agile and incredibly fast in all its versions - from the early '1600' Sprint GT to the mighty '2000' GT Veloce, through the exuberant '1750' and the smaller '1300' - this car owes much to its GTA and GTAm, which at the turn of the 60s.
Vehicle
This Alfa Romeo GT 1300 Junior, with chassis number AR1284473, was registered in Italy, in the province of Gorizia (a city whose original registration plates still remain), in 1972. It is therefore the penultimate series of this model, the only one produced in 1971-1973. It is immediately recognizable by the typical front end with just two round headlights positioned at the fender edges and the absence of the famous "step" on the bonnet (a hallmark of the first series models with 1.3 and 1.6-litre engines). The car for sale is accompanied by a certificate of origin issued by the Alfa Romeo Historical Department and a historical certificate issued by Asi (Automotoclub storico Italiano). This Alfa features lowered suspension and a limited slip differential which was an option on the more powerful 132 hp 2.0-litre at the time. The car is currently equipped with this engine, but it is also equipped with the original "1300". The odometer shows the mileage of 7668 km.
Outside
It took a lot of hard work to bring the Alfa Romeo GT 1300 Junior back to its former glory, but it was worth it. The attached photos show the car in very good condition. Such a result was possible thanks to a thorough and deep renovation of the bodywork, in which - as the owner told us - some parts previously repaired not very well were subjected to a thorough renovation. There were traces of red paint on some parts of the car, but historical research by the parent company itself showed that the original color was Piper yellow: this is the color with hints of champagne offered by Alfa since 1972 along with metallic olive green and a more vibrant Le Mans blue . In any case, both sheet metal processing and painting seem to be done perfectly. Also true to original specifications are the chrome bumper moldings, which are sharper and squarer than on earlier versions of the model, and - being an example that benefited from the 1972 facelift - also the iron wheels with concave hub caps and exposed bolts and two additional horizontal air intakes under the front bumper.
Inside
Inside, too, everything looked good: the cockpit of this classic Alfa appears to be in excellent condition, and not just in the most visible places. For example, lifting up the rugs shows that the floor is in perfect condition. The headliner is also well stretched and generally shows no particular signs of wear. The leatherette seats look like new and the rear bench seat is new in the true sense of the word: it was recently replaced and looks like it has not been sat on since. The whole is adorned with the iconic Hellébore three-spoke sports steering wheel with its distinctive wooden crown, standard at the time on the most powerful and expensive 1750 GT Veloce and optional on the smaller '1300'. The glove box in front of the passenger seat appears to be slightly cracked, while the door panels are intact and properly secured. The spare wheel well and, more generally, all internal sheet metal parts also seem fine.
Pod
The underside of the GT 1300 Junior is a pretty sight. Judging by the photos, the car under the "dress" looks really good: there is not even a trace of rust. The 2.0 engine also appears to be in great shape and comes with a pair of perfectly cleaned and adjusted Dell'Orto carburettors in a tuning where - the dealer assured us - nothing was overlooked. The engine oil was changed less than a year ago, while the gearbox underwent a general overhaul. Also completely overhauled was the original 1300 engine which had never been run since the overhaul.
The most interesting stories
According to the information contained in the production documentation of Alfa Romeo and mentioned in the certificate of origin attached to the car, this Alfa Romeo GT 1300 Junior was manufactured on December 19, 1972 and sold just eight days later in Trieste. The registration certificate shows that the car had at least four owners, the last of whom bought it in 2018 and provided for a complete bodywork restoration, also taking care of the interior and both engines with which it is sold. The car is accompanied by an extensive photo gallery showing the overhaul of the 1.3 engine and gearbox, as well as the body made in 2022.
what we think
A true Alfa Romeo lover can't ask for more: the Giulia Sprint GT is one of the most beautiful, fascinating and captivating cars to ever leave the Milan factory. This example in particular has the great advantage of having been completely restored and very nicely repainted in its original colour. The lowered suspension and limited-slip differential are additional advantages for sportier drivers, as is the powerful and quick-accelerating 2.0-litre engine that still delivers outstanding performance today. In short, behind the wheel of this Alfa there are all the ingredients for having fun and attracting the admiring glances of passers-by.
