The minimum wage rate in Illinois is$13.00 per hour.It's greater thanFederal minimum wageof $7.25. You are entitled to a higher state minimum wage. The minimum wage applies to most workers in Illinois, with a few exceptions that includeemployees tipped, some students and other exempt professions.†
The last change to the minimum wage in Illinois was in 2008, when it was raised from $5.25 from $7.75 to $13.00.
Effective January 1, 2023, the minimum wage in Illinois is $13.00 per hour. Employees over the age of 18 who do NOT receive tips may receive $12.50 for the first 90 days with the employer. Under 18s are paid $10.50 per hour for less than 650 hours worked for the employer in a calendar year. If an employee works more than 650 hours for an employer in a calendar year, they must be paid $13.00 per hour. The tip wage is $7.80 per hour. Employees who receive tips must be paid the minimum wage, but the employer may include the employee's tips in the amount not to exceed 40% of the salary. An employer can pay training compensation to employees age 18 or older with tips of $7.80 for the first 90 days if tipped at 40% or $12.50 if they do not tip. After 90 days, the rate must be increased to $13.00 if you don't use tips.
LOCAL MINIMUM WAGEChicago: Effective July 1, 2022, Chicago's minimum wage is $15.40 per hour for employers with 21 or more employees and $14.50 per hour for employers with 4 to 20 employees. Tipped employees (employees who receive tips as part of their pay, such as waiters in restaurants) have a minimum wage of $8.70 for employers with 4 to 20 employees and $9.24 for employers with 21 or more employees. If a tipped worker's wage plus tips is not at least the full minimum wage, the employer must pay the difference.County C00k: His current minimum wage is $13.35 an hour and employee tips are $7.80.

Illinois Minimum Wage Exemptions
In addition to the Illinois-specific minimum wage exemptions described above, the Federal Fair Labor Standards Act defines special minimum wage rates that apply to certain types of workers. If you fall into one of the following categories, you may be paid below the Illinois minimum wage:
- Minimum wage under 20 in Illinois-4.25 dollars- Federal law allows any employer in Illinois to pay a new employee under the age of 20 a training wage of $4.25 an hour for the first 90 days of employment.
- Minimum student wage in Illinois-$11.05- High school or full-time students who work part-time can be paid 85% of the Illinois minimum wage (just $11.05 an hour) for up to 20 hours a week with some employers (e.g. university programs).
