TheCar and driverEditors' Choice 2022 list includes 116 vehicles - cars, trucks, crossovers and SUVs - out of nearly 400 models thatCar and drivereditors tested, rated and ranked this year. Each year,Car and driver conducts rigorous instrumental testsin hundreds of vehicles. These results and the following criteria are used to select vehicles for the "Editors' Choice" list: the rankings each vehicle scores in its market segment compared to the competition, the extent to which it fulfills its intended mission, and the editors' subjective evaluation of each vehicle's performance. Only vehicles that will be on sale in 2022 and those with which the staff has practical driving experience are eligible for the editorial award.

Volkswagen Golf GTI

The Golf GTI defined the term "hot hatch" from its debut in Europe in 1976 and in the USA in 1983. More than 40 years later, the eighth-generation icon embodies the same formula - refinement, style, power and fun performance. The all-new Mk8 GTI features an all-new electronic architecture, new vehicle dynamics system and more power than ever before. The EA888 evo4 TSI® 2.0-litre turbocharged direct injection engine produces 241 horsepower and 273 Nm of torque. Volkswagen's IQ.DRIVE technology is standard, including Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assist, Journey Assist and Emergency Assist (the latter only available on DSG® models).

The suggested retail price for the 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI with a standard six-speed manual transmission starts at $29,545. Pricing for the seven-speed dual-clutch DSG with Tiptronic® starts at $30,345. The destination fee for all Golf GTI models is an additional $995.

Volkswagen Golf R

The all-new Golf R continues to build on the heritage of discreet performance that first began in the 2004 model year with the introduction of the rally-inspired Golf R32. Nearly two decades later, the fifth installment of Volkswagen's performance halo ups the ante with new racing-inspired content and premium features, including a 27 hp advantage over its predecessor equipped with a 315 hp 2.0-litre turbocharged EA888 evo4 TSI direct injection engine. Torque vectoring on the rear axle brings a whole new level of handling to the Golf R for 2022.

Volkswagen Jetty GLI

Since its debut in 1984, the Volkswagen GLI has had one mission: to deliver an affordable, high-performance German sedan. In 2022, the "GTI with trunk" will be refreshed, enriched with new technologies and design, and will be offered in one fully equipped equipment. Styling updates include new front and rear bumpers, new colors and new wheels. Inside, the Volkswagen Digital Cockpit instrument cluster is now standard, as is Volkswagen Car-Net® with in-car Wi-Fi capability by subscription, wireless charging and wireless App-Connect for compatible devices. Volkswagen ID.4

The ID.4 is Volkswagen's first all-electric SUV and the brand's first global electric vehicle. Built on Volkswagen's electric vehicle architecture, the MEB - a modular electric drive matrix - combines the strengths of a purpose-built electric vehicle with the performance, packaging and value that have distinguished the brand for decades. The compact SUV is equipped with an 82 kWh battery and is offered in 201 hp rear-wheel drive and 295 hp all-wheel drive configurations. Modern design is combined with advanced features such as standard IQ.DRIVE® advanced driver assistance technology and intelligent voice and touch infotainment. In 2022, Volkswagen expects to improve EPA-estimated range over model year 21 and will add Auto Hold, 135kW DC fast charging and Plug & Charge throughout the model year. Three years of 30-minute fast charging sessions with Electrify America are included at no additional cost.

The rear-wheel drive ID.4 Pro's suggested retail price starts at $40,760, before a potential federal tax credit of up to $7,500. Pricing for the ID.4 Pro with all-wheel drive starts at $44,440. Target charges for all ID.4 models are $1,195.

Volkswagen Taosa

The 2022 Volkswagen Taos compact SUV debuts a bold exterior design, practical yet sophisticated interior, advanced technology and accessible 4Motion® all-wheel drive. Sitting underneath the Tiguan, the Taos offers typical Volkswagen driving dynamics, high quality and smart packaging in a smaller package at a lower price. Taos boasts a high-tech package that includes the standard Volkswagen Digital Cockpit and Car-Net® telematics, offering Wi-Fi in the car with a data plan. Available technologies include Volkswagen's MIB3 infotainment system, as well as IQ.DRIVE® driver assistance technology, Light Assist and Dynamic Traffic Sign Display. All versions of the Taos are powered by the 1.5-litre turbocharged EA211 TSI direct injection engine, generating 158 horsepower and 184 Nm of torque.

The suggested retail price of the front-wheel drive Taos S starts at $22,995. The Taos S 4Motion starts at $25,040. Target charges for all ID.4 models are $1,195.

Volkswagen Tiguan

All 2022 Tiguan models come with an 8-inch Volkswagen Digital Cockpit instrument cluster, while the 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro is available in the top trim.
